Common Scenarios

Sharing

make a recording easier to send in chat, email, or a form with a size limit.

Storage

reduce space used by personal clips or archived recordings.

Web publishing

prepare a smaller MP4 or WebM while controlling resolution and frame rate.

Input & Output

Input: one local video in a container and codec combination your browser can read.
Modes: choose a quality preset or a 1–500 MB target. Target-size output is an estimate and best effort.
Output: one MP4 with H.264 video and optional AAC audio, or one WebM with VP9 video and optional Opus audio.
Output files are limited to 512 MiB. Only the primary video and optional primary audio track are processed.

Usage Advice

For a smaller result, lower the quality, resolution, or frame rate, and remove audio when it is not needed.
If a target is missed, use the retry action. Encoding varies, so retries can improve the result but cannot guarantee an exact size.
Choose MP4 for broad device compatibility. Choose WebM for browser-focused use when VP9 and Opus fit your workflow.
Keep the tab open and the device awake during compression. Large or high-resolution videos can take substantial time and memory.

Limitations & Compatibility

Compression re-encodes the video. It is not lossless, and lower size settings can visibly reduce quality.
Input support depends on the containers and codecs your browser can decode. A familiar extension does not guarantee support in every browser.
Estimated and target sizes are best effort. The final file can be smaller or larger, and an exact target is not guaranteed.
Extra audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, attachments, and metadata are not preserved. Only the primary video and optional primary audio track are exported.
4K and large files depend on your device, browser codecs, memory, and graphics capability. Some devices cannot finish them.
A result larger than 512 MiB cannot be returned by this tool.

Privacy & Security

CrateX.app reads and compresses the selected video locally in your browser and does not upload it. The source and generated result remain in page memory while the tool is open. Download or locally share the result yourself, and clear the page, downloads, and site data on shared devices when needed.
